SUMMARY:Wim Mertens at Pallas Theater
DESCRIPTION:Season: 2019\nOpening: 22 October 2019\nEnd: 22 October 2019\n\n\nThe “architect” of minimalism returns to Greece! \nThe pioneering European minimalist composer and one of the world’s leading contemporary composers comes to Greece at the Pallas Theater in Athens (22/10). In a journey through space and time with beauty as his guide! \nFaithful to his repetitive structures\, he has managed to spread minimalist music in unexpected spaces and make it popular with “unsuspecting” audiences\, thanks to the particular melodic sensibility that permeates all his compositions\, and the characteristic timbre of his voice\, a falsetto that seems to come from the piano itself and that simultaneously “spas” the norms of contemporary music. The Flemish composer\, who “is not classical enough for classical music lovers and at the same time is too classical for the pop world”\, will in a year’s time celebrate 40 years of a very productive career. \n\n\n\nSince the early 80s\, the versatile Belgian composer\, musicologist\, counter-tenor\, guitarist and pianist Wim Mertens has managed to gain an appeal to a wide audience\, always working with a focus on minimalism and positioning music as a basic human expressive need: “I don’t belong to the category of professional musicians who approach all musical genres. That’s why I felt from my first steps that I should create a new audience for my music… Especially in Greece you are looking for more flexible musical interpretations and I feel that the audience is open to my inspirations\, they understand the way I sing in an unconventional language and most importantly they make my music their own” he told Anastasia Kouka in ETHNOS. \nIn his discography he has recorded around 70 albums\, some of which have become almost classical. From the score for Jan Fabre’s The Power of Theatrical Madness (1984) and Peter Greenaway’s award-winning film The Belly of An Architect (1987) to the now classic albums of minimalist composition – a milestone in his career\, Vergessen (1982)\, Struggle for pleasure (1983) and Maximizing the Audience (1985) – the first album on which he added a voice\, his own. \n\n\n\nOne thing is for sure\, Mertens never repeated musical forms because they were successful or standardized for the sake of commercial appeal. \nMertens was born in Neerpelt\, Belgium in 1953. He started learning guitar at the age of eight and after 10 years of continuous involvement with music\, he obtained his first degree in 1975 – against the odds – in social and political sciences\, seeking the answer to the question “what ultimately determines historical events\, what are the factors\, what are the elements that drive history”\, realising that all art forms change and are shaped by following historical events. \nEventually\, he studied musicology at the University of Ghent and higher theory and piano at the Ghent Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. His doctoral dissertation (1980) eventually became the famous book “American Minimal Music”\, a landmark text on American repetitive music by LaMonte Young\, Terry Riley\, Steve Reich\, and Philip Glass. “This music showed me that there are new areas to explore and we must not rest on our laurels or we will lead to musical sterility.” \n\n\nSince 1978\, when he was working as a producer at the then Belgian Radio – Television\, he performed concerts of Philip Glass\, Steve Reich\, Terry Riley\, Meredith Monk\, Urban Sax and others and thus he got acquainted with American minimalist music. He admired American composers “who feel free and work more by intuition as opposed to the Europeans whose war has taken them back and put many barriers and in their compositions they strive for seriousness and logical sequencing”. He also co-produced the Funky Town radio program with Gust De Meyer\, his main collaborator on the experimental album “For Amusement Only”\, where they wrote electronic music for… pinball machines.\n\n\nMertens has managed to find the popular parameters of contemporary music and uses them in compositions either for symphony orchestras and smaller orchestral ensembles\, or pieces for piano and voice (his own\, always) or for “minimalist” and unexpected combinations of instruments (twelve piccolos\, ten trombones\, thirteen clarinets). “In music there is always the difference between what you see and what you hear … I say you see what you hear. The listener has to understand through hearing. To move away from conventional codes\, such as language\, and to understand with clarity the composer’s creation … I translate silence as a phase within the music. I incorporate elements of silence and atonality into my music\, far from the rules of tradition.” he told Dimitris Doulgeridis in NEA. \nIn the first part of his two concerts in Greece\, Wim Mertens will present his most recent work\, “That Which is Not” from 2018\, which according to him combines “logical flow with the playful element and the concepts of fun with virtue”. \n\n\n\nThis work along with his recent releases\, “Dust of truths”\, “What are we\, lock\, to do?” and “Charaktersketch”\, published together in a cassette entitled “Cran aux oeufs”\, confirm his excellence and charisma\, both in terms of composition and interpretation. \nIn the second part of his concerts in Thessaloniki and Athens\, the audience will enjoy a selection of the best known tracks from the composer’s rich discography (1980 – 2018)\, tracks that are particularly loved by the Greek audience: “Often a bird”\, “Struggle for pleasure”\, “Not at home”\, “Close cover”\, “The tonality”\, “4 Mains”\, “No testament” and many more.

SUMMARY:Ara Malikian: The rock star of the violin at Pallas Theater
DESCRIPTION:Season: 2019\nStart: 27 September 20219\nEnd: 28 September 2019\n\n\nAra Malikian Royal Garage World Tour for the first time in Greece! \nRock violin star Ara Malikian and his orchestra are coming to Pallas Theater\, on 27 & 28 September 2019. \nAra Malikian is coming to conquer the Greek audience with his unparalleled temperament.  The charismatic violinist’s world tour\, entitled ROYAL GARAGE WORLD TOUR\, started on the occasion of his new album and “travels” to over 50 countries\, with at least 220 sold-out performances in iconic music venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London\, Carnegie Hall in New York\, Tempodrom in Berlin\, Volkswagen Arena in Istanbul\, National Auditorium in Mexico and L’Olympia in Paris. \nWith his irresistible personality and infectious energy\, Ara Malikian has recorded over 40 albums and won numerous international awards. He is now established as one of the most sought-after musicians and has shared the stage with many major artists and orchestras\, including Sting\, Lebanese singer Fairuz\, the London Chamber Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\nIn this tour Ara takes a journey through many different musical styles. Known for his eclectic repertoire\, Ara Malikian and his explosive orchestra present subversive arrangements of works from Bowie to Bach and from “Missirlou” to Led Zeppelin and Paganini.  The essence of his music is forged from his travels around the world. Born in 1968 in Lebanon\, of Armenian descent\, he gave his first concert at the age of 12\, chose to study music in Germany and later in London\, and for many years has lived in Spain. \nAra Malikian\, together with his band of 7 great musicians\, shares with the audience his musical culture\, which he won “from the depths of garages all over the world”\, with his new album “Royal Garage”. \n\n\n\n“My relationship with garages began in 1976\, when the war broke out in Lebanon. At that time\, most bands around the world were rehearsing in garages. In the garages with their sounds\, they created an alternative style that changed the history of music\, and I didn’t want to be a part of that development.  I was 10 years old when my father was telling me to encourage me: “Let’s go down to the garage\, son. We’re going to form a band\, like … Rollings.” My band wasn’t as cool as the Rolling Stones’ band. I didn’t associate with Keith Richards or Mick Jagger and we were NOT talking about rock and avant-garde music… I had my Uncle Nono waiting for me with a half broken trumpet\, my neighbor with a bottle of aniseed liqueur and my grandmother with a mandolin. Then came the other garages… The German\, the English\, the Parisian\, the Spanish… I seem to be destined for them. Fascinating things happen to me in the garages.” Ara Malikian

SUMMARY:100 years Georgios Souris at Pallas Theater
DESCRIPTION:“Souris the satirical\, the prophetic” A unique musical and narrative performance\, dedicated to the 100 years since the death of the poet Georgios Souris. \n\nThe composer-performer Paschalis Tonios presents his new musical work\, based on the poetry of the “Aristophanic” poet Georgios Souris\, who with his sharp and self-sarcastic humour remains impressively topical and disarmingly true.\nFramed by a multi-member group of renowned actors\, accompanied by two choirs and directed by Megaklis Vidiadis\, he will take us on a journey into the past\, in order to look to the future\, to recognize the Greece we live in and that lives within us.\nThis unique performance is an important artistic event\, which will highlight the exceptional cultural heritage left by Georgios Souris 100 years ago and which has been nominated 5 times for the Nobel Prize for Literature.\nPart of the proceeds will be donated to METAdrasi to support unaccompanied refugee children in Greece.\n\n\nA few words about Georgios Souris: \nGeorgios Souris is one of the greatest satirical poets of modern Greece\, having been described as a “modern Aristophanes”. He was born in 1853 in Ermoupolis\, Syros and died in 1919 in Neo Faliro. An excellent journalist of metrical satire of the events of the time\, at the age of 30 he published the metrical weekly satirical newspaper ‘O Romios’\, which was published almost until his death. He also wrote several metrical comedies. SUMMARY:Stamatis Spanoudakis presents his new album at Pallas Theater
DESCRIPTION:At Pallas Theater\, on 29 & 30 October 2018\, at 9:00 pm\, Stamatis Spanoudakis will present his new album entitled “Psyche mou\, don’t bend”. \n“A lyric from 2003 that becomes a song\, that becomes an album\, that becomes a concert. A “conversation” secret that calls to the inner life and to avoiding the daily traps of the “world”. A music that is sweet but also manly\, a melodic breath to what troubles and frightens us. To what is happening around and within us. Intentionally and unintentionally”\, Stamatis Spanoudakis emphasizes. \n“Greeks\, heads up! The sayings of our ancestors that “blood\, tears and sacrifices ask for you”\, the “Awesome Protection”\, the comfort that is generously given to us and the eternal presence that asks persistently\, but gently\, to finally open the door of your heart. A concert\, then\, with new songs and old favorites\, in a “wrong time” that proves to be so appropriate for those who “fight the good fight”\, concludes the well-known creator. \n\n\n\nWith him: \nthe string orchestra “Tamalo”\, with Alexandros Papadiamantis (violin) and Dimitris Kottaridis (cello) as soloists\, \nPanos Katsikiotis (drums)\, Nikos Hatzopoulos (double bass)\, Giorgos Kontovas (piano) \nthe four-voice choir “Melodoi” conducted by George Ziakas\, \nand the Spyros Lambrou Children’s Choir. \nThe proceeds of the concert will be donated to the children’s institutions of the Holy Metropolis of Singapore and South Asia. Specifically\, it will be given for the education\, housing and medical care of 1\,000 children in Medan\, Indonesia\, where the Holy Metropolis operates 5 schools (kindergarten\, elementary\, middle school\, high school\, polytechnic school)\, a boarding school and a hospital. With this care\, children from the slums of Medan are rescued from gangs\, abuse\, drugs and crime\, and educated so that they can live as adults in their homeland and not be forced to take the dangerous path of illegal immigration.

SUMMARY:Thanasis Vassilopoulos with the airy sound of the clarinet at Pallas Theater
DESCRIPTION:Season: 2018\nStart: 5 February 2018\nEnd: 5 February 2018\nConcert title: “My way”\n\n\nIn the times we live in\, we are increasingly finding that we need common points of reference. If our musical tradition is such a point of reference\, then one of its prince-expressors is expanding and multiplying its potential\, considered by many of his colleagues as a “national asset”. And he is none other than the clarinetist Thanasis Vassilopoulos. In a series of performances\, starting from the historic Pallas Theater in Bucharest\, he proposes the musical coupling of East and West\, marrying the traditional clarinet with the elegant sounds of American musicals and soundtracks. \nIn this magical journey\, the accompaniment of the instruments by the symphonic ensemble “Foux ensemble” under the direction of conductor George Zachariou\, contributes to the creation of a dreamy musical retrospective\, thus exalting the airy sound of Thanasis Vassilopoulos’ clarinet. \nThe interpretation of songs from both Greek and world cinema was chosen to be performed by people who have tasted and starred on the theatre stage. Thus\, Thanasis Alehuras\, Bessie Malfa\, Memos Begnis and Tania Trypi\, undertake this time with their vocal and not their acting skills\, to enchant us in exactly the same way as they have been impressing for years\, winning the audience’s critics for their interpretive skills. \nAs for the program\, Frank Sinatra’s iconic My way\, acquires a unique identity from the peculiar sound of Th. Vassilopoulos\, which has been praised from time to time by both Vangelis Papathanasiou and great Greek artists. The orchestral arrangements will be played and songs such as the Oscar-winning Chariots of fire\, the optimistic La vita e bella\, the theatrical Memories\, the mythical and also Oscar-winning The Godfather\, Singing in the rain\, the melody of Phaedra\, Hartino the moon and many… many… many more… will be performed. \nA performance in which Thanasis Vassilopoulos “reinvents” well-known songs\, choreographing the notes to paint the air. Imagination… is a Greek affair\, as he says. \nParticipants: Thanasis Alevras\, Bessy Malfa\, Memos Begnis\, Tania Trypi \n\n\nPerformers: \nDirected by Nikos Soulis\nOrchestration / Orchestra Conductor.\nLighting design: Eleftheria Nteko

SUMMARY:Mikis Theodorakis: The concert in honour of the great Greek composer at Pallas Theater
DESCRIPTION:Season: 2017\nStart: 4 December 2017\nEnd: 4 December 2017\n\n“Mikis Theodorakis: the Cretan\, the Greek\, the Ecumenical” on 4 December at the Pallas Theater\, with the symphony orchestra and the leading ballet soloists of the Kiev National Opera.\nExcitement at the rehearsals of Miki Theodorakis with Mary Lina and Tatiana Papageorgiou.  \nMore than half a century after its writing\, Mikis Theodorakis meets Mary Linda for “Archipelagos” and gives new form to the lost “Cretan Concerto” with the collaboration of Tatiana Papageorgiou \nThe composer Mikis Theodorakis\, the performer Mary Linda and the pianist Tatiana Papageorgiou were very emotional during the rehearsals of part of the programme to be performed at the magnificent concert to be held on 4 December at the Pallas Theater in honour of the leading Greek composer\, with the collaboration of the legendary Symphony Orchestra and the Kiev Opera Ballets. \nThis unique evening\, made possible by the sponsorship of the Bubouras Foundation\, the great Greek benefactor who lives in Odessa\, will feature the composer’s iconic works inspired by Crete and the Greek sea: The first Children’s Songs of 1937\, the “Cretan Concerto” for piano and orchestra in its first performance\, the beloved song cycle “Archipelagos” and scenes from the famous ballet “Alexis Zorbas”. A similar evening was held in October – on the anniversary of the no – in Odessa\, also sponsored by the Boubouras Foundation. Now the performance is being brought to Athens\, with the Symphony Orchestra and the Kiev Opera Ballets honoring the leading Greek composer. \n\n\n\n“Archipelagos” \n“It is very touching to meet more than 50 years later to present again the song cycle “Archipelagos”\, said Mikis Theodorakis addressing Mary Linda during their rehearsal for the concert. It should be noted that “Archipelagos” was written by the composer in 1959 with Mary Linda and Grigoris Bithikotsis as the first performers\, with poetry by Dimitris Christodoulou\, Nikos Gatsos\, the composer himself\, Odysseus Elytis\, Yannis Theodorakis and Panos Kokkinopoulos. During the rehearsal\, Mary Linda performed songs such as “In potisa rose”\, “Myrtia”\, “Rodia tetraklonis”\, etc. \nThe composer and the performer have great love and appreciation for each other. In a warm and friendly atmosphere they remembered the old times and the moments of the first recording session in the studio with Manolis Chiotis where he played bouzouki. One of his most beautiful memories\, as the composer pointed out. Among other things\, Mikis Theodorakis also recalled how the song “Se potisa roodostamos” was born\, the lyrics of which (Nikos Gatsos) had written down in a notebook. During a trip that they made with Linda and Chiotis\, when they went down to the hotel for breakfast\, the foundations were laid for the setting of the song to music and the subsequent recording of the song with Mary Linda. \nThe news of the rehearsal: Mikis Theodorakis showed on his tablet where he has all his work\, unpublished songs that he wrote much later and suggested to Mary Linda to sing them\, noting: “these are songs that I always wanted you to sing and now the time has come to record them with the contribution of Tatiana Papageorgiou”. In fact\, while rehearsing\, the composer often raised his hand while conducting Mary Linda. \n\n\n\n“Cretan Concerto” \nA very important element is also that Mikis Theodorakis together with the pianist and academic musicologist Tatiana Papageorgiou worked on the “Cretan Concerto” in a new\, reborn form. This is a work that the composer wrote in 1951 while he was in Chania\, which was subsequently lost and which Tatiana Papageorgiou unearthed after doctoral research at a British University. \n“Crete was a redemptive place for me then\,” noted the composer\, who chose to go to Chania after his release from Makronissos and all the suffering he experienced there. “It is also a great source of inspiration for his work. At that time he wrote many works for symphony orchestras and classical ensembles that were inspired by Crete\,” Tatiana Papageorgiou pointed out. One of them was the “Cretan Concerto”\, in a Cretan syrto rhythm\, which he played with the Chania Symphony Orchestra. There is even a documentary photograph of the orchestra\, which the composer showed us during the rehearsal”. Since then\, the “Cretan Concerto” is being performed for the first time\, 66 years later\, in a new form and with a new orchestration by Tatiana Papageorgiou\, now on 4 December at the Pallas Theater in a spectacular symphonic version with the Kiev Symphony Orchestra. \n“Crete\, with its steely rhythms\, carries the heroic history and the struggles of the Greeks”\, as the composer himself notes\, and symbolizes in his music dynamism and optimism. Crete for Miki is not only a place of origin\, but a place that takes on multiple symbolism in his work. \n\n\n\n“Zorba” \nThe monumental “Zorba”\, which will be presented in the second part of the programme\, also inspired by Crete\, represents the universality of Mikis Theodorakis\, as it is a recognizable work that is admired and appreciated internationally. Besides\, Archipelagos also contains elements of Cretan tradition and the spirit of Aegean music\, in music and lyrics. These include the song “Anamientos Syros y Tzia” with poetry by Odysseus Elytis. Expressive\, joyful\, touching songs\, on the opposite side of the steel rhythms that represent the Crete of tenderness and emotion. Among them also the very popular song “Abduction” (“I will take a boat\, my little heart”) with which Mikis Theodorakis won the first prize at the Thessaloniki Song Festival in 1961 with Mary Linda as the singer. At that time it was performed with Manolis Chiotis on bouzouki and with a Symphony Orchestra\, something very innovative for the time. Something that will happen now at the Pallas Theater with the Symphony Orchestra of the Kiev National Opera under the direction of Oleksiy Baklan. \nThe soloist on bouzouki in “Zorba” is the great virtuoso of the new generation Thanasis Vasilas\, a long-time collaborator of both Mary Linda and Mikis Theodorakis. \nThe concert\, due to the celebration of the International Day of People with Disabilities (3/12)\, is being held in cooperation with the Panhellenic Paraplegic Association\, to which the proceeds will be donated. \nWORKS: Zorba\, Archipelagos\, Cretan Concerto
