The Jazz Masters return to Pallas Theatre with a true legend!
Kenny Barron, the legendary jazz pianist, returns to Athens after a decade with his trio and opens a new series of concerts at Pallas Theatre entitled “In Touch with the Jazz Masters at Pallas” on Monday, December 2.
The piano master with unparalleled skill and elegance of playing, with over 6 decades at the top of jazz and his amazing permanent collaborators Kiyoshi Kitagawa on double bass and Jonathan Blake on drums, present material from their new album and join Athens on their European tour for a unique performance.
Kenny Barron is the pianist featured on hundreds of recorded jazz masterpieces and comes from the “cradle” of Jazz, the legendary scene of the city of Philadelphia, which introduced John Coltrane, Billie Holliday, Benny Golson, Stanley Clarke, McCoy Tyner, Stan Getz, the Heath bros and newer ones like Christian McBride, Michael Brecker etc. Born in 1943, Kenny has had, an absolutely fascinating career in music having played with Philly Joe Jones from the age of 16, and played with the legend Yusef Lateef just before he finished high school! Before he turned 19 he was in New York and playing with Roy Haynes, James Moody and Lee Morgan! There he would be introduced to Dizzy Gillespie who would hire Kenny without having heard a note from him! He would stay in Dizzy’s band for five years and would record 8 albums with him! Other collaborations followed with Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, Buddy Rich and Freddie Hubbard among dozens of others. He later worked again with his mentor the legendary Yusef Lateef for a few years and also with the legend Ron Carter and created his own first jazz super groups including the iconic “Sphere”!
Nowadays, after 9 Grammy nominations, more than 40 personal albums, and many hundreds of recordings in collaboration with others, the officially designated National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master Kenny Barron is one of the most historic chapters of the golden age of jazz and also a musical anchor of the present.
Barron’s playing literally reflects all of jazz history, and we will have a prime opportunity to witness it on December 2 at 9 p.m. at the amazing Kenny Barron Trio concert with Kiyoshi Kitagawa and Jonathan Blake at Pallas Theater.
