In a recent online interview ahead of his one-night-only concert in Athens, Matteo responded with clarity, sincerity, and consistency to questions about his music, his life, and his relationship with his father, the renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli. “I hope this time I’ll have the chance to explore and get to know your beautiful country a little better,” he says. “There’s so much beauty and richness in your culture.”
The son of the world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli, Matteo was raised in an environment steeped in music—particularly opera and classical. As he himself notes, he learned a great deal from his father. “My father has passed his knowledge down to me,” he says. “He’s a role model, and I respect him deeply.” The weight of the Bocelli name, and constant comparisons to his famous father, don’t intimidate him. Instead, he moves forward equipped with his father’s advice, guided by his own emerging success and a talent that, as he puts it, is “a combination of something innate and a great deal of hard work.”
As for what lies ahead? “I prefer to live in the present,” he says without hesitation. Matteo began playing the piano at a young age and realized early on that music was his true calling. “I’ve always loved music, ever since I was a child,” he recalls. “At sixteen, I understood that music was more than a passion—it became the essence of my life.” The guiding principle in both his work and his personal philosophy is simple: “To make people happy and bring smiles to their faces. When I achieve that, I feel happy too.”
His desire is to keep creating and savor every moment, always placing human connection at the center. “When you’re true to yourself, when you’re honest and authentic, that’s when you win,” he believes. That’s why, whenever he’s about to collaborate with someone, “I look them in the eyes. If there’s a real connection, if they can truly communicate with me, then I move forward.”
